The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is one of the founding faculties of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. It developed from the "Collegium Jenense", which was founded in a former Dominican monastery in the middle of the 16th century. The rhetorician Johannes Stigel and the theologian Victorin Strigel moulded the Collegium into an educational institution oriented towards humanist reform concepts. They taught teachers, lawyers and theologians in the Lutheran spirit.
Under the name "Alma Mater Jenensis", the University of Jena began regular teaching in 1558. In the 18th century, the Privy Councillor Johann Wolfgang Goethe systematically engaged important thinkers and researchers and created ideal conditions for the joint work of the humanities and natural sciences. Later, famous philosophers such as Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel left their mark on the humanities in Jena.
Today, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is the largest faculty at Friedrich Schiller University Jena alongside the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.
