Wilhelm von Humboldt Prize for Dissertation from Jena

The dissertation “Coordination Structures in Old and Middle High German” by Sophia Oppermann, written at the Institute of German Linguistics at FSU, has been awarded this year’s Wilhelm von Humboldt Prize by the German Linguistic Society.

"Gender Aspects at a Glance 2025” award

We congratulate Riccarda Funk on winning the “Gender Aspects at a Glance 2025” award. In her dissertation at the Department of Speech Science in Jena, she investigated how gender characteristics develop in children's voices. Her long-term study proves this: Even at primary school age, boys' and girls' voices differ significantly - regardless of anatomical factors. The study impressively shows how strongly gender is acoustically constructed from an early age.
