•  The Politics of Equality: An Ethnography of Gender Equality Work in Academia (Main Project)

The project places university administration and academic management at the centre of its analysis. It focuses on gender equality work as a firmly institutionalised form of agency charged with reducing social and gender-based inequalities in academia and in the production of knowledge, and thus with bringing about “equality”. The project is guided by the proposition that gender equality work provides an especially revealing ethnographic lens through which to trace the profound transformation universities are currently undergoing: a transformation driven by an intensification of competition and, at the same time, by heightened moral expectations concerning equality of opportunity.

•  Spiritual Ecologies

The question of how humans relate to nature is fundamental to religious frameworks of interpretation and experience. In light of current developments, this relationship is being negotiated with increasing urgency at both theological and practical levels. In this context, some religious actors advocate a more sustained practice of “spiritual ecology”. The research project examines the contemporary formation of such a spiritual ecology through the example of the Jewish Renewal movement in Germany and the United States, approaching the two contexts both comparatively and as closely entangled. Its aim is to demonstrate how, in response to profound changes in environmental conditions, the relationship between nature and religion is itself being recalibrated. By focusing on Jewish Renewal, the project foregrounds the innovative role that new religious currents within established religious traditions play in shaping spiritual ecology.
