In the course of the war against Mithridates VI of Pontus, the Romans advanced into the area of the Isthmus between the Black and Caspian Seas in the 1st century BC. The kingdom of Iberia (mod. East Georgia) was located in the central part of this region south of the Greater Caucasus, which became the focal point of both Roman and Iranian interests and was integrated into the border policy of the two empires. Frank Schleicher offers an overview of the historical development of Iberia and the entire region from the first Roman contact to the Arab conquest in the seventh century by tracing the social, cultural and religious developments of the empire.
