CIPA was founded in 1968 as the Comité International de la Photogrammétrie Architecturale (International Committee for Architectural Photogrammetry).

Today, CIPA Heritage Documentation remains a dynamic international organization with a dual mission: to keep pace with technology and to ensure its benefits for the preservation of cultural heritage, education, and dissemination.

In 2023, the CIPA Symposium took place from June 25 to 30 in Florence.
