Conference in Veliko Tărnovo 2009

Beyond the rich academic exchange, the conference was marked by a warm and collegial atmosphere. The hosts had arranged a delightful cultural program, including guided walks through the picturesque old town of Veliko Tărnovo with its medieval fortress Tsarevets, and excursions to the nearby Preobrazhenski Monastery, Arbanasi, and the Patriarchal Monastery of the Holy Trinity. Particularly memorable were the visits to Arbanasi’s famous churches, whose frescoes and iconostases reflect the artistic and linguistic heritage of the region.

The conference concluded on 2 May with an informal roundtable and the promise to continue the fruitful international collaboration. Participants left Veliko Tărnovo not only enriched by scholarly insights but also inspired by the historical and spiritual landscape of northern Bulgaria – where, as one participant put it, “grammar and history meet in stone and word alike.”
