Buchvorstellung und Diskussion mit Prof. Omer Bartov (Brown University)

Israeli-born Holocaust historian and one of the world’s leading scholars of genocide, Prof. Omer Bartov will present and discuss his book Israel, What Went Wrong? In this urgent and deeply reflective work, Bartov examines the historical trajectory of Zionism, the political and social transformations of the Israeli state, and the escalation of oppression and violence that has led Israel to face growing international accusations of war crimes and genocide. Drawing on decades of research into nationalism, mass violence, the Holocaust, and genocide, Bartov situates the current catastrophe in Gaza and the broader violent domination of Palestinians within a longer historical and ideological context. A second focus of the event will be the particular role and historical responsibility of the German state, society, media, and academic and cultural institutions. Against the background of Germany’s memory culture and its responsibility after the Holocaust, Bartov will critically engage with the ways in which German political discourse, public institutions, and narratives of historical guilt intersect with contemporary forms of violence and the suppression of dissent concerning Palestine.
