The Sonic Anthropology Research and Synthesis Studio
SONARS is a collective research space investigating the entanglement of ethnographic fieldwork, cultural analysis, media theory with artistic practice, and musical-poetic experimentation. We playfully explore how listening, recording, sampling and audio synthesis can contribute to anthropological inquiry. Our multimodal work unfolds across four fields:
Ethnography and Theory – listening as epistemic practice; sound, harmonics and modulation as object, theoretical tool and method for anthropological research.
Synthesis and Modulation – Engaging playfully and multimodally with sound, noise, and music in order to conduct analysis in a creative and exploratory manner: sampling, layering, patching, and modulating sonic material as an approach to navigating aesthetic and physical ambiguities emerging from empirical fieldwork and theoretical reasoning.
Art and Installation – sonic artworks that emerge from ethnographic research or fold back into it.
Music and Poetry – forms of expression through which that what escapes language nonetheless makes itself heard.
What interests us most are the transitions between these fields, not their boundaries – the resonant space in between is where we work
